Antique German Beer Stein – Marzi & Remy, c.1904–1915

Marzi & Remy - mold 1770

From the collection of Jorg Kurt Wegner

This is a beautifully preserved ½-litre German beer stein from the renowned westerwald region, produced by Marzi & Remy during the early 20th century, circa 1904–1915. Crafted from durable salt-glazed stoneware, it features finely incised cobalt and brown decoration and bears a classic German drinking phrase in raised lettering:

“Der erste Zug ist nie lang genug”
“The first swig is never long enough”

The stein is fitted with its original pewter lid and thumb lift, both fashioned in the traditional style, and stands approximately 8¾ inches tall.

This specific design—mold #1770—is attributed to Johann Wilhelm Karl Görig (1851–1925), a noted German designer active in the westerwald ceramic arts. Görig collaborated with Marzi & Remy between 1904 and 1915, bringing art nouveau (jugendstil) aesthetics into functional pottery. This is reflected in the stein’s elegant flowing borders, stylized script, and organic curvature, all characteristic of the movement’s emphasis on natural beauty and harmony in everyday objects.

The base is marked “Gesetzlich Geschützt”, indicating a legally protected design under early 20th-century German law.
