Wilhelm von Krewet, 1607

Simon Peter Gerz

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

This is what the Wilhelm von Krewet family coat of arms looks like.

This is how the remains of Vernaburg Castle, built in 1607 by order of Wilhelm von Krewet, look today.

The large heavy stone mug was made by the S.P. Gerz manufactory as part of a historical collection series with a tin hoop.
The original mug was made in 1607 in memory of the celebrations on the occasion of the completion of the Vernaburg Castle.
Vernaburg Castle was built in 1607 by order of Wilhelm von Krewet. He was a representative of an old influential clan of ministerial bishops in the service of the Great Holy Roman Empire.
The Crevet ministerial family, Latin Cancer (Krebes), also spelled Kreveth, Krewett, and Kriefft, was, according to the Paderborn Noble Calendar, one of the four pillars of the Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn, along with the noble families of Haxthausen, Stapel, and Brenken. They were the so-called Edelmeiers of the Bishopric. They enjoyed a special relationship of trust with the prince-bishop, enjoyed many privileges, and, like the old ecclesiastical protectors of old, formed the secular arm of the diocese. Like the Lords of Verne, this noble family also rendered loyal vassal service to the Principality of Paderborn for centuries.
It was a widespread family that flourished from the 13th to the 17th centuries and died out in the male line before the middle of the 17th century. In 1607, the founder, Knight Wilhelm von Krewet, abandoned his residence at the Burgmannshof "Freiheit" in the Salzkotten district and moved to the newly built Vernaburg.
After the male line of the von Krewet family died out in 1638, ownership of the castle passed through the marriage of Anna-Maria von Krewet to the von Brenken family, who still hold it today.
Wilhelm von Krewet's death date is listed on the family tree as before 1613. Consequently, he was only able to enjoy his new home for about six years.

Wilhelm von Krewet is a unique personality in his own way. He was not a Kurfürst - prince, with the right to choose the emperor of the Great Holy Roman Empire. At the same time, he had a serious influence in the northern Rhine lands as minister of the Great Holy Roman Empire. To this day, the descendants of his family make themselves felt in the monarchies of modern Europe.
