Losunger Edelbiere - Maßkrug
Description.
This post-war 1L salt-glazed stoneware mug, likely from around 1960, is an example of a mass produced brewery advertisement mug, and features a deeply incised capacity mark and calibration line in the classic fishhook “L” style. The body has a grayish tone and a smooth exterior and interior, lacking visible potter’s throw lines. The large handle appears to be hand-applied, though not definitively. A cobalt-blue transfer image on the front depicts a robed man joyfully holding a foaming stein, beneath which appear the words Losunger Edelbiere, with the initial letters in stylized script.
Brewery Details.
The mug originates from the Losunger Brauhaus Nürnberg, a mid-20th-century brewery active in Bavaria’s Franconian heartland. The illustrated figure on the mug is part of the brewery’s advertising legacy and was drawn by artist Siegmund von Suchodolski, who created promotional artwork for Nürnberg-area beer culture. Variants of this mug exist with alternative Losunger designs, including the Nürnberg tower motif. This example represents the post-war revival of local brewery branding through ceramic promotional ware, typical of the 1950s–60s.
As always, I welcome and appreciate your feedback.
