Portrait of a Bavarian Maiden.
Handcrafted 1L Salt-Glazed Beer Stein with Enamel Portrait Lid
Circa: 1900–1914 | Southern Germany or Austria.
Note: Previous owner listed it as “19th Century”, so late 1800s is also possible.
This beautifully preserved 1-liter stoneware stein showcases a finely detailed enamel inlay lid featuring a young Bavarian or Tyrolean woman in traditional Tracht — with flushed cheeks, clear blue eyes, and a striking green felt hat, set against a radiant baby blue background. The vivid coloration and crisp porcelain enamel suggest careful handwork typical of the pre-WWI era.
The stein body is salt-glazed with a soft matte finish and prominent interior swirl lines from hand-throwing. No calibration mark or capacity stamp is present — an unusual omission for the period, hinting that this was perhaps not intended for commercial tavern use, but rather personal or commemorative.
The five-ring pewter lid includes decorative cutwork and a strong sculpted thumblift. Of particular note is the metal band slightly overlapping the inlay — a reinforcement detail sometimes seen on finer lids to protect delicate porcelain edges. The base is rough and unmarked, but a natural discoloration across its centerline hints at traditional firing methods.
Whether given as a special keepsake or purchased by a traveler enchanted with Bavarian or Tyrolean charm, this stein beautifully captures the spirit of a region and time where rustic grace met delicate craftsmanship — a truly striking piece.
BTW, very well cared for!
Note: Very difficult to take pictures of enamel lidded steins without showing glare of lighting, at least for amateur iPhone picture taker like me. Ha ha. At least the lighting on the shelve it’s displayed on is perfect.
As always, I welcome and appreciate your feedback.
