Brauerei Forsting - Maßkrug
Maßkrug Described:
This salt-glazed 1L stoneware masskrug features a bold, cursive inscription reading “Brauerei Forsting”, underlined for emphasis. The front/top/center incised “1L.” capacity mark is paired with a calibration line flanked by upward-pointing hash marks, typical of regulated post-war German serving vessels. The mug’s surface is smooth without visible potter’s lines, though the interior swirl marks are evident, indicating traditional shaping methods. The handle appears hand-applied, and a lid was likely once attached, as suggested by the hole at the top of the handle.
From Brauerei Forsting to Privat Gut Forsting: Why the subtle name change?
The brewery in Forsting, a small village in Upper Bavaria, was founded in 1871 and has operated continuously ever since. Originally established as a local village brewery serving the surrounding agricultural community, it came to be known simply as “Brauerei Forsting”. Over the decades, the brewery evolved into a Privatbrauerei (private brewery), distinguishing itself from larger industrial breweries and emphasizing family ownership and independence.
The name “Gut Forsting” reflects its connection to the rural estate on which it sits — “Gut” being the German word for estate or manor. Throughout its history, the brewery has focused on traditional Bavarian brewing methods, producing classic regional beers such as Helles, Dunkel, and Festbier. It survived both world wars, the consolidation waves of the late 20th century, and continues today as a respected small regional brewery rooted in local tradition and quality. Today, Privatbrauerei Gut Forsting is one of the few remaining true village breweries still independently operating in Bavaria, proudly brewing beer “in the heart of the community” for over 150 years. And I’m proud to own this masskrug representing Forsting brewery history.
As always, I welcome and appreciate your feedback.
