Westerwald- Stoneware Masskrug/Maßkrug

From the collection of Jorge O. Soriano

westerwald- Stoneware Masskrug/Maßkrug

Well, I have no information on this stein, other than it was acquired in Germany many years ago, probably 1986-87.

It’s an Open 3 Ring Hinge.

Simple pewter designed lid and thumblift.

The body has the characteristic potter’s turn lines.

But what stands out most about this Maßkrug is its size and lack of capacity and calibration mark. I believe both of these marks may have existed on the side, near the top of the rim, and possibly covered up, either by the stein maker or perhaps the stein’s owner? Regardless, this Maßkrug is is truly massive. I would guess 1 1/2, but maybe it is 1 1/4?

Further research needed for accurate age, but for now, I’m comfortable saying c.1900.

This is a very nice looking Maßkrug; nothing fancy, but solid, nice westerwald style and cream color stoneware, beautiful turn lines, nice large handle, and it’s massive?

As always, I welcome and appreciate your feedback.
