Grafenwoehr Training Area c. 1965

From the collection of Walter Swett

The manufacturer of this 1/2 litter porcelain stein is unknown. My guesstimate is it is from circa 1965.

On April 1, 1908, Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria ordered the construction of the Grafenwoehr Training Area. The first artillery round was fired on June 30, 1910.

The central scene is the coat of arms of the City of Grafenwöhr.

The right side scene depicts the water tower and forester’s house which were built between 1909-1911.

The left side scene is the old city Hall in downtown Grafenwoehr.

Amazingly, all three structures depicted on this stein survived two bombings in 1945 that caused significant damage to the training area and nearby town
