Designed in 1908 by Paul Wynand, this student-stein is a fine example of Reinhold Merkelbach's art nouveau (jugendstil) products.
On the back of the handle is a very detailed shape of an owl. The words on the front read "GAUDEAMUS IGITUR", which is latin and translates as "So let us rejoice". It is the title of a student song, but it was also known as a beer drinking song in many universities [link] .
