I'd like to agree with the late Steve Smith in poo pooing (is that spelled right?) the widely spread theory that the rings were used for holding rags. If you've ever really tried it you'll find that you need a pretty thin rag to fit. And you have to be very careful about it because the ceramic ring is easily broken.
