Congress passed The Merchant Marine Act in 1936 and the US Merchant Marine Cadet Corp was established in 1938. The Walter P. Chrysler Estate at Kings Point, NY was selected as the site for the Merchant Marine Academy in 1942 and the academy was dedicated in September 1943. Training at the MMA was accelerated during WWII and by war's end, 6,634 officers had graduated.
