This 2-liter Girmscheid relief stein, mold #888 was manufactured for the finishing firm Jakob Goldschmidt, Nuremberg sometime between 1890-1906 as evidenced by the firm’s “JGN” mark found on the base. Although there are no manufacturer’s markings on the stein, I was able to confirm the manufacturer as Girmscheid by researching the The Beer Stein Library westerwald Beer Stein Handle Gallery, I identified the handle as “MG79”, one produced by Girmscheid. I located the stein in the Beer Stein Library Girmscheid Catalog, mold 888, although the handle shown on the example in the catalog was different, a similar stein, Girmscheid mold #845, had the same handle as on this 888.
The saying on the stein translates to “A cheerful song, a good glass of beer, a charming maiden, that’s what I recommend”.
