St. Hubertus 2L Master Stein

mold 693

From the collection of Jacob Lance Heath

“Es lebe was auf Erden stolziert in grüner Tracht,
die Wälder und die Felder, die Jäger und die Jagd.”
(Long live he who struts on earth in green apparel,
the forests and the fields, the hunter and the hunt.)

St. Hubertus is the patron saint of hunters among French and German-speaking peoples of Europe. The crucifix between the antlers of a stag symbolizes the vision that appeared to him at the moment of his epiphany.

Text is from a poem written by Wilhelm Müller in 1822 and set to music in 1823 by Konradin Kreutzer. The opening line makes reference to the Förster (forest ranger) and his traditional green uniform (Trachtenanzug).

Master stein to Nos. 694 and 695. See also No. 479 and 480.
