NED KAN LITRE

From the collection of Paul Van Eck

NED KAN LITRE

A stoneware stein, produced in Germany for the Dutch market.
A so-called 'NED KAN' , which was a measure that was in use from circa 1830 until circa 1869.

The lead band around the handle is provided with a calibration mark with the letter 'S'. However, there is no calibration peg in the body, which is strange. One would expect to find such a peg on a calibrated jug.

The lid is stamped on the top with the letters 'IHS' and the scratched Roman numeral 'XVIII' (18).
The thumb rest is of the type also found on so-called 'eikeltjeskannen' ('acorn jugs').
