Masskrug with pre-1871 ‘M’ Bavarian measure

From the collection of J JAW

Salt-glazed stoneware with a gently grooved ‘combed’ body surface. The front is plain apart from a hand-engraved ‘M’ and line, denoting the original Bavarian ‘Mass’ (Measure). Flat pewter lid with a ball thumb-lift. Lid engraved with the former owner’s initials ‘I M’ in the Kurrentschrift writing style of the time.

Although the Mass was replaced by the Litre as the measure of beer in Bavaria ~1871 after the Unification of Germany, it took a few years for this to become universally adopted.
