Late 20th century Girmscheid Stein

Matthias Girmscheid

From the collection of Peter Roe

Girmscheid Beer Stein

Late 20th century Girmscheid Stein in an 18th ? century design. The stein holds .8Lt. but has no capacity mark and the lid has an engraving showing the date of 1719 and a cartouche with entwined letters of which I can only make out an "S". The incised marks on the base read Handmade, Girmscheid Van Gogh 1984. After further investigation I belive that this stein is from the Schlossbrauerei Scherneck (1719 >> 2014). The Schloss still has a beerstrube which still sells the Scherneck brand supplied since 2014 by the Unterbaar brewery

The shape and design of this stein is typical of late 18th and early 19th century steins that were sold mainly in Holland (The Netherlands). This stein is a 20th centry copy, and was produced for advertising the wellknown and still active Dutch beer brand Bavaria.
