Merkelbch 489 - Friedrich III

Reinhold Merkelbach - mold 489

From the collection of Randy Satterfield

Became Kaiser in 1888 after the death of his father, Wilhelm I. He had throat (larynx) cancer and died 91 days later. He was succeeded by his son, Wilhelm II. Friedrich was known as "the liberal emperor". He had many ideas to improve Germany and was saddened that he wouldn't have the opportunity to get them done. His son was quite different and immediately set about building up Germany's military force, culminating in WWI.
The stein shows the beginning and end of his reign on the left and right sides, 1888 to 1888.
