other - modelnr. 996

Uit de verzameling van Andrew Ives

Dudson Brothers Pottery was founded in 1800 by Richard Dudson in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, originally operating under the family name as Richard Dudson. Over the decades, it evolved from its original name through succeeding family generations before eventually adopting the Dudson Brothers name and later becoming Dudson Limited. The company ceased operations in 2019. Churchill China, also located in Stoke-on-Trent, acquired the Dudson brand name and the intellectual property rights to a number of popular product ranges.

Originally pioneered by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1700s, Jasperware is a type of unglazed, vitreous stoneware. Dudson created their own variations in various colors, including sage, drab, blue, white, and notably, brown.

Dudson Brown Jasperware is typically adorned with classic white, applied relief designs. Common motifs include classical figures, intricate floral borders, and botanical features like ferns or stalks of wheat. Dudson was famous for their "tankard" shape jugs, teapots, and "cocoa jugs".

This pitcher has the number 996 hand incised on the bottom. This is the official catalog or mold number for this specific Dudson design. A piece marked "996" is historically documented as a brown stoneware pitcher approximately 7.5 to 7.75-inch tall, featuring a distinctive rope-style handle and classical white neoclassical raised reliefs (typically depicting wheat sheaves, vertical floral dividers, and grapes or berries on vines). The exterior is a matte, unglazed finish and the interior is glazed. The pitcher comfortably holds approximately 1.1 liters of liquid.
Information on the internet indicates the Dudson company began manufacturing mold number 996 in the 1880’s. There is no stamp on the bottom indicating “England” or “Made in England”, which would be consistent with manufacture prior to 1891.

The lid and lip ring were manufactured and applied by the firm of James Dixon & Sons, which was founded in 1806 in Sheffield, England. The firm was one of the major British manufacturers of the Industrial Revolution. The lid, lip ring, and hinged thumb lift appear to be Britannia metal, which is a specific type of pewter alloy favored for its silvery appearance, smooth surface, and high durability. It primarily consists of 92–93% tin, 5–6% antimony, and 2% copper. Developed in 18th-century England, it is harder, brighter, and more versatile than traditional pewter. James Dixon & Sons registered trade mark since approximately 1879 was a Trumpet with a Banner hanging from it.
