Large collectible mug "Tower of the King of Jesters". The mug is equipped with a music box. The capacity of the mug is 1 liter, the height is 30 cm. The lid is made of ceramic in the form of a medieval castle with two watchtowers.
The mug was made at the famous German S.P. Gerz manufactory in the period 1955-1960.
The circle was named the "Tower of the King of Jesters" for a number of reasons. The first thing that catches your eye is two windows, in one of which you can see the silhouette of the king, in the other a person in a clown costume with a sword.
The image of a buffoon with a sword symbolizes the only permitted mouthpiece of satire during the Middle Ages, which could be used to criticize the hierarchs of the ruling Roman Catholic Church. Therefore, it was customary at every royal court to keep a witty and talkative buffoon.
Over the years, the myth of the King of Buffoons was formed in the German folklore. That is, about a buffoon who, in the minds of the medieval German community, was perceived as a figure who gained the ability to influence the opinion of kings. This mythical character had a real historical prototype. He was Klaus Narr from Ranstedt, who lived around the period 1486-1530. This is the legendary German court jester, who became a symbol of "natural madness", in which contemporaries saw divine revelation or folk wisdom. Klaus was a "natural" buffoon, a man with real mental characteristics, whose strange behavior and appearance were considered a "miracle" in that era. During his lifetime, he served four Saxon electors (Ernst, Frederick II, Frederick the Wise and John the Firm), as well as Archbishop Ernst II of Magdeburg.
According to legend, Elector Ernst met Klaus when he was tending geese. To prevent the geese from escaping, Klaus tied a rope around their necks and, unwittingly, strangled them. His simplicity made the ruler laugh so much that he took the guy to the palace.
Despite the fact that Klaus was often described as a madman, he was credited with the gift of foresight and the ability to tell the truth, which they feared.
It was said that Klaus predicted a fire in the Coburg fortress, in a panic demanding to bring water, when no one in the castle itself was aware of the trouble.
The famous poet Hans Sachs made Klaus the hero of his works, using his image for satirical criticism of the Catholic Church (for example, in the collection about the "three miracles" in Leipzig).
In 1572, the priest Wolfgang Buttner published the book "627 Stories about Klaus Narr", which became incredibly popular in Germany and cemented his status as a folk hero.
The image of Klaus Narr became important for understanding the transition from the medieval perception of madness as "God's gift" to the Renaissance image of the wise fool. His life illustrates the idea that the truth is often hidden behind a mask of stupidity, and a "madman" may be the only sane person surrounded by tyrants.
The music box of the mug is equipped with a Swiss MAPSA ("Swiss Musical Movement") mechanism. The mechanism of the music box of this mug is tuned to the melody from the song "O Mein Papa". — "Oh, my dad"). This popular German song was written in 1939 by a Swiss composer. By Paul Burkhard. The song was first performed in the musical comedy "Firecracker" (from German - "Der schwarze Hecht"). The song in this comedy is performed by the daughter of the circus owner, who remembers her late father, a clown and an artist, with love and nostalgia.
This musical composition became an international smash hit after the trumpeter Eddie Calvert released an instrumental version of it in 1953.
The song has been translated into many languages, including English ("Oh! My Pa-Pa").
Thus, the King of Buffoons also received musical accompaniment.
