Jug "Pattern of branches of the ripening hops". This antique jug was made in 1887 by one of the highly skilled craftsmen of the famous Villeroy & Boch factory. In the Villeroy & Boch product catalog, the mold of this jug has the number 1783. The capacity of the jug is 4 liters. The height is 38 cm.
The surface of the jug is decorated with patterns of the wickerwork of the rapidly developing hops. The hops are blooming here and at the same time pleasing with ripening cones.
The decoration on the surface of the jug was applied in a very complex and time-consuming technique, the so-called relief ceramic carving. The essence of the method is that before firing, the artist removes the ceramic mass from the decorated surface with a hand chisel, thereby creating the desired pattern. The artist was forced to act very quickly. Not everyone could be capable of such a thing. This increased the cost of labor, which affected the high price of products. The free fields are covered with peculiar bumps. This technique allowed for the retouching of irregularities after the chisel had removed excess ceramic mass.
These jugs were produced in conjunction with a set of 0.25-liter or 0.5-liter portion mugs. The molds for these mugs are cataloged under the number 1802 by Villeroy & Boch.
