An old beer mug "Boy on the Lawn". The mug has a capacity of 0.3 liters and a height of 17 cm. The mug is made of emerald glass. The design is painted with white enamel. The shape of the mug itself is made in the old technique of free-blowing glass. Due to the maximum amount of manual labor, such products had a high cost.
The next wave of popularity of mugs made in this glass-blowing technique occurred in the 80s of the 19th century. This was made possible by the development of a new breakthrough technique for applying airy white enamel drawings to the surface of colored glass. This new technology was developed by the American artist Mary Gregory (1856-1908). She made significant advancements in the decoration of glassblowing products at the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Her artistic techniques were as simple as they were captivating.
Angela M. Bowie, a researcher in the history of glass craftsmanship, describes the distinctive features of Mary Gregory's glass in the Encyclopedia of Glass as "stylized white enamel paintings, usually depicting a child outdoors playing with objects such as butterfly nets, soap bubbles, fishing rods, or hoops. The trees and foliage often have a typical "feathered" style, the child's figure has a strangely old-fashioned proportion, and the enamel is applied to the glass using the firing method."Gregory, her sister, and possibly others she taught, used white "enamel paint" with crushed glass as a mixture. To bond the paint to the glass, they fired it after application. This fused the paint to the glass, making the painting a part of the glass. Gregory worked at Boston and Sandwich from 1880 to 1884.
