"Tavern scenes" Simon Peter Gerz mold #467

Simon Peter Gerz - modelnr. 467

Uit de verzameling van Major Rush

A beautiful, massive 2-liter stoneware beerstein/jug named "Tavern scenes" from the westerwald region of Germany, town Hohr, made by the Simon Peter Gerz factory. Mold number is #467. As befits the westerwald region, the beerstein is richly decorated in a predominantly cobalt blue and glazed with salt. It features an inlaid lid. The beerstein was likely made between 1875 and 1895, when it featured massive fittings with an "open" hinge with three rings and a thumb grip located directly above the hinge. The mark on the inside of the lid ("Reichszinn Hohr") also indicates a similar age, with such marks ("Reichszinn") being used among others on beersteins between 1871 and 1918, suggesting a high-quality item made before World War I.

Inscriptions on the mug: "Wo man singt, da lass dich nieder, bose menschen, haben keine lieder" which can be translated to "Where there is singing, settle down; evil people have no songs."

Unfortunately, I don't know why the rim of the lid and its mounting were painted something like gold, and 2 holes were drilled.
