The outer surface of the bottom has an ink stamp from Hannes & Wieninger.
Hannes & Wieninger purchased blank ceramic mugs from well-known ceramic and porcelain factories in order to artfully decorate them for their customers and regular gift buyers.
In this case, the mug blank was purchased from the Villeroy & Boch factory. Its mold number in the Villeroy & Boch catalog is 1526. These were special order steins with unnumbered decorations, made for universities, clubs and other organizations, special events, etc. See the link: [link]
In this case, Hannes & Wieninger fulfilled an order for the design of a student mug. See the link: [link]
In the picture we can see a musical instrument lyre. Feathers on the knight's helmet are painted in white and pink. The same colors are painted on the knight's cloak.
This symbolism is used by the Academic Choral Society of Munich. In German, it is called "Akademischer Gesangverein München" (AGM).
The AGM was founded on January 12, 1861, in Munich, as the "Musical Student Men's Fraternity in Munich."
All German student associations had their own coat of arms and motto. The AGM coat of arms is depicted on the mug. In its lower part there is an inscription in German: "Ehr unser Zier, Lied das Panier, That unser Worth,
Gott unser Hort!". Translated, it means: "Honor is our decoration, song is our banner, deed is our word, God is our refuge!" This is the motto of the AGM Student Association. The organization is still active.
More information about AGM's current activities can be found at the following link: [link]
The tin lid of the mug is inlaid with a brass insert with a relief pattern. Here we also see the AGM coat of arms and the motto. Along the edge of the tin part of the lid, the names of the four members of the student association are engraved. The inscription ends with the German abbreviation "Weihn. 1897". Translated, this means "Christmas 1897". This suggests that the mug was made in 1897 as a Christmas gift.
Hannes & Wieninger was founded in 1840 in Munich as a porcelain painting workshop by Josef Hannes (porcelain painter) and Anton Wieninger (lithographer/painter). For more information about the history of this company, please visit the following link: [link]
