Stein Villeroy & Boch #1997.
The mug is known as the "George Ehret Brewery". This well-known mug was made in 1890 by the Villeroy & Boch (V&B) factory. In the V&B catalog, the mold for this mug is listed as item number 1997.
The mug's surface is adorned with a pattern of hops, barley, and branches. The pattern is engraved on the ceramic surface. This is a complex and therefore expensive method of decorating.
On the side surfaces of the mug, there is an inscription in German, divided into two parts: "Hopfen u. Malz" and "Gott erhalt." Translated from German, this means "Hops and Malt, may God preserve them." This is considered to be the long-standing motto of the true masters of brewing in old Germany.
On the inlaid lid, there is another symbol of the old German brewers: a geometric shape resembling a six-pointed star. In this case, this symbol has nothing to do with the "Star of David". Until the end of the 19th century, this symbol was used in German lands as the "Star of the Brewer".
In our case, in the center of the "Star of the Brewer" is a monogram in the form of two letters of the Latin alphabet GE. This is the first letter of the name and surname of George Ehret. It is his portrait that is depicted on the mug.
George Ehret was the first major brewer in the United States.
In 1866, he founded The Hell Gate Brewery in New York City. It has become one of the largest breweries in the country. By 1900, its annual production volume reached 602 thousand barrels of beer. By the time of George Ehret's death, his fortune was estimated at $40 million. George Ehret, a native of Germany, passed away in 1927 at the age of 91. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.
In 1890, the year this mug was produced, George Erit was celebrating his 55th birthday. The following year, in 1891, the Hell Gate Brewery, which he founded in New York in 1866, would celebrate its 25th anniversary. Thus, the mug was being prepared for two important anniversaries for Erit. By 1890, George Erith, an emigrant from Germany, had become one of America's greatest beer barons of the late 19th century. An interesting and richly illustrated book was even released for these two anniversaries.
This circumstance shows that the production of the mug with the portrait of Erith was approached very thoroughly. It was decided to hire an artist-designer Mattias Hein, who was a staff designer at the V&B factory and was not seen working on the side. Matthias Hein signed his products with his personal autograph. On the anniversary mug of the brewer Erit, Hein's autograph can be seen on the left side of the lower point where the handle is attached to the body.
