This old beer mug is considered one of the creative masterpieces of the artist Franz (Jakob) Ringer, who was recognized by his time.
Franz Ringer had his own recognizable signature stamp. However, in most cases, he hid or disguised his signature mark in the folds of the design. In my case, the artist placed his signature mark in the most visible place. Moreover, the design of the mug is exclusively in one color - blue. There is an explanation for this.
The mug was made by the Merkelbach & Wick manufactory. This is evidenced by the brand mark on the outside of the bottom of the mug. In 1902 and 1903, due to changes in fashion, Merkelbach & Wick had to focus on the jugendstil range. Artists with a new perspective were hired to create new models.
It should be noted that this mug is in the jugendstil format. Only a self-sufficient master like Franz Ringer could have approved such a radical solution.
The mug was made before 1905.
Franz Ringer often helped the city of Munich. One example occurred in 1906, when Munich was festively decorated for the Emperor's visit during the celebrations for the laying of the first stone in the foundation of the German Museum. Franz Ringer was a member of the "Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein" (Bavarian Art Association) and conducted technical discussions at its meetings. At social events, Franz Ringer contributed to entertainment by performing comedies and delivering humorous speeches. Franz Ringer's talent for decoration and inspiring speeches made him a popular organizer of celebrations and festivals. From time to time he could be seen on the stage of the Munich Artists' House, where he gave humorous performances.
On December 1, 1917, Franz Ringer died at the age of fifty-two in Munich. For more information about the life and work of Franz Ringer, see the link:
