From Biedermeier to Jugedstil
This mug was made using the technology of blown glass by shape. It is not typical in its own way, because the best masters of the glass factory of the famous Bavarian noble family von Poschinger worked on its design and correctness of forms.
Founded in 1568, the company was the oldest glass manufacturer in Germany and the oldest family-owned glass manufacturer in the world.
However, this particular mug, which has become an icon of the new style, was produced between 1885 and 1890.
The period after 1880 was very difficult for German glassmakers. Industrialization was growing, and so was competition. Many small workshops were leaving the market. The larger ones were forced to merge. Under these conditions, it was unlikely that any of them would have taken the risk of investing in the emerging Modern style in Europe, which became known as Jugedstil in Germany.
Nevertheless, the wealthy Poschingèr family was one of the first to embrace the new style. They were able to invite talented artists and designers to join them.
As a result, using the example of this circle, we observe a transition from the artistic style of Biedermeier, which has been consolidated in Germany since the 1830s, to the beginnings of Jugedstil, the style of representatives of the bourgeoisie (in fact, enlightened new entrepreneurs).
A cautious novelty is expressed in the three-tiered breakdown of the mug. Each of the tiers is decorated in different artistic forms. They harmoniously and unobtrusively, like waves of a controlled geyser, push out one new form after another.
This clear innovation was pursued exclusively for marketing purposes.
On the one hand, they couldn't afford to lose their loyal, conservative customer base, but on the other hand, new forms allowed them to attract new customers from the nouveau riche.
It seems that one of them was the first owner of this mug. He didn't appreciate the grayness of tin, but he also didn't want to spend money on gold. Instead, he covered the lid with a hop cone and painted it with gilded paint. It was a cheap and Jugedstil-inspired solution.
