A gift mug for a married couple on the occasion of the birth of a child.
This antique German mug is made by blowing glass into a mold. The surface of the mug is decorated with a deep relief pattern with repeating geometric shapes. A sign indicating its volume is engraved on the front of the mug. This is the Regensburg style. The mug was probably made in one of the Regensburg glass workshops.
However, the volume is not indicated on it.
After the unification of Germany on January 1, 1872, the law on the unified system of weights, measures and volumes was adopted. Widespread enforcement of the provisions of this law began to be observed after 1875.
This suggests that the mug was made before 1875.
The ceramic insert of the lid shows a pattern with flowers and an inscription. The inscription, translated from German, reads: "Where flowers bear fruit, may all the sorrows of love disappear." In Germany, this statement was made as a toast to a married couple expecting the birth of a child.
We draw conclusions. The mug could be a gift for a married couple, for example, on the occasion of the birth of a child.
Two letters "G" and "K" are engraved on the rim of the lid. Usually such inscriptions mean the initials of the recipient of the gift. Thus, this mug is personalized. It follows from this that the decoration on the mug was custom-made, which significantly increases the collector's value of the product.
