"Beer Tasting" #346

Matthias Girmscheid - modelnr. 346

Uit de verzameling van Paulo Vik Falcon

The mug is made in the style of historicism. The characters in the center of the painting are dressed in Renaissance-era costumes. They are engaged in tasting beer. The scene takes place in the basement of a monastery fortress, where the brewer has set up a beer storage facility. This is evident from the interior design of the room and the "Brewer's Star" emblem hanging in the upper right corner.
The mug's mold has the number 346. This mold belongs to the Matthias Girmscheid manufactory.
Matthias Girmscheid was born in 1845 into a family of merchants and continued the family business by opening his own trading firm in 1870 in the town of Hör (now Hör-Grenzhausen), located in the heart of Germany's main ceramic production region. In 1871, he married Therese Herz, the daughter of the potter Philipp Jacob Herz, which undoubtedly influenced his decision to change his field of activity from trade to manufacturing.
Girmscheid's manufacturing company began operations in 1884 and was initially involved in the production of ceramic pipes for water supply and sanitation. In government documents from 1893, the company was listed as a pipe factory with ten employees. Around 1895, Girmscheid expanded his business to include the production of beer mugs and other ceramic items. By 1903, Matthias Girmscheid had established himself as a "ceramic factory" with a workforce of forty employees. You can find more information about this at the following link: [link]
The handle of my mug is made in a rough, primitive style. The technique of attaching the handle to the body also looks primitive. The mold number is printed on the body of the mug and is located behind the bottom of the handle. This method of printing the mold number is considered very inconvenient and impractical compared to printing it on the outer surface of the bottom by pressing a stamp. These three facts suggest that this mug was one of the early works of the Matthias Girmscheid factory in this field. Accordingly, this is approximately 1895-1896. In a later period, the artistic appearance of the handle was significantly improved and the method of its attachment to the body was refined. This can be confirmed by examining the appearance of later products from mold number 346. See the link:

One little-noticed detail deserves special attention. In the place of rough attachment of the lower part of the handle to the body of the mug, there is a recess made by pressing a ball. This simple technique allowed for a slight decoration of this product element. This technique was widely used in the production of beer mugs at the G.F. "Fritz"Thenn factory between 1877 and 1886. In 1886, the G.F. "Fritz" Thenn factory ceased to exist. Nine years later, one of Fritz Tenn's employees might have found himself in demand by Matthias Girmscheid, where he could use this simple technique.
