"Drinking Companions of the Past”

Villeroy & Boch - modelnr. 1909

Uit de verzameling van Paulo Vik Falcon

The Villeroy & Boch manufactory managed to become the king of the market for all categories of buyers when it introduced mugs model number 1909. The breakthrough was provided by three main factors. Although each of them could guarantee a clear advantage.
First. The ideal proportions for mugs with an internal volume of 0.5 liters have been found. The design decision to increase the height of the outer surface while maintaining a universal 0.5 liter volume for all has expanded the possibilities for artists to offer their drawings.
The outer surface of the mug, when unfolded onto a plane, gets a size of approximately 23 cm horizontally and 14 cm vertically. The aspect ratio gives a factor of 1.6 - the golden ratio, the number of harmony.
This allows artists to perform plots of any complexity and content.
It's convenient for artists. Artists like to work with such proportions of the surface. The customer of the artists' services gets the opportunity to choose the best of them.
Second. The surface, which is convenient for the artist, allows you to execute plots of any complexity. The masters of the caricature genre successfully use this. On the side surface of the 1909 model, you can depict any humorous plot with several characters with emotions and with double meanings. That's exactly what happens. In fact, these are comics on a beer mug.
This allowed this model to have a huge number of plots. There are hundreds of them. And performed by the best illustrators of their time. They shared their masterpieces and signed their autographs. A clear sign that the artist is satisfied with his work.
And finally, the third. Today, more than 120 years after the period of mass production of beer mugs of this model, it is possible to draw an unambiguous conclusion about the pricing mechanism for them.
It should be understood that the cost of production of these mugs was the same regardless of the content of the plot of the picture or the decor. Nevertheless, it was the plot of the drawing that could influence the number of those released and, accordingly, those that have survived to this day. Some subjects fell into the demand of the society of that time, some did not. This could be influenced by the ethical foundations of German society at that time and other socio-cultural factors.

Colleagues, if you have any other knowledge or opinions, I would be pleased to read them. I am waiting for your comments.
