1. Brewery History: Hürnerbräu Ansbach
• Founded: 1809 by Georg Ludwig Hürner on the Ansbacher Bürgerhof, quickly growing into Ansbach’s largest brewery.
• Industrial expansion: In 1868 the distillery was dropped and beer production ramped up; by 1882–1888 Hürner beers won awards at the Nuremberg and Brussels fairs and were exported worldwide (e.g., to America and the Orient).
• Trademark: The crown emblem with Schutz Marke (“registered trademark”) signals Hürner’s name was officially registered under the Law for the Protection of Product Designations (“Gesetz zum Schutz der Waarenbezeichnungen”) which centralized trademark registration at the Imperial Patent Office in May 1894.
• Later history: Hürnerbräu ceased independent brewing in 1993, with the brand revived by Tucher in 2017.
2. Stein Features & Dating Clues:
Feature: “1L.” capacity mark near rim
Implication: Required by the 1881–84 German volume laws; stein is post 1884.
Feature: “Schutz Marke” in crown emblem
Implication: Trademark law in force from 12 May 1894; stein cannot predate that.
Feature: Smooth tan glaze (cream white at base, discoloration?)
Implication: Typical late 19th/early 20th century slip coated or molded stoneware for brewery use.
Feature: Interior turn lines
Implication: Indicates wheel thrown production methods still in use (common through c. 1910).
Feature: hole atop handle.
Implication: Just means it once likely had a lid.
Putting these together, the earliest possible date is after 1894 (trademark law) and the latest is likely before WWI curtailed decorative stoneware (by 1914).
Estimated manufacture: circa 1895–1914, most likely around 1900 when Hürner’s trademark emblem and 1L regulation converged in their brewery issue mugs.
