Walzenkrug

Uit de verzameling van Andrew Ives

Large light gray stoneware stein. Cylindrical shape common c.1700-1820. Combed body with incised checkerboard design as the central decoration. Cobalt blue coloring. The stein comfortably holds approximately 1.4 liters.
The lower portion of the handle is not fully pulled into a tail (common c.1700-1780) and not completely flat (common c.1770-1870). Maybe this might indicate post-1780 production and the potter no longer pulled the lower portion into a tail but had yet to transition to flattening it.
The hollow ball thumb lift and large closed 5 ring hinge are appropriate for the 1700's-early 1800's time period. The large domed lid was popular in the latter half of the 1700's and into the early 1800's.
The pewter mark is partially impressed and currently unidentified, it appears there may be a date of 1809 within the mark.
