Schlaraffenland Heaven

Hauber & Reuther

Uit de verzameling van Mike Finn

The graphics on this stein appear intended to evoke at least some of the elements of Schlaraffenland, the land of milk and honey, or Utopia of German legend, where sausages grow on trees and tables set themselves. This stein was made by Hauber & Reuther for LB&C "Leopold Bauernfreund & Co" of Munich specialized in elaborately designed character steins. Sourced largely from the stoneware manufacturer Hauber & Reuther of Freising. These were painted and fitted with pewter lids by Bauernfreund, and they never had mold numbers. There are no HR marks on these steins, only LB&C. But the capacity mark with the serif at the top of the L is present and the "geseztlich geschutst" mark is the same size and font as that used on HR stoneware steins. They bought many different stein bodies from H&R. This replaced another Schlaraffenland stein with a salamander handle that was produced pre-HR and by HR. After HR lost its clay supply in 1886 they contacted Merkelbach & Wick in1888 to redesign it and supply them to HR. This one has an HR capacity mark and is about 8-1/4" tall.
