Early Historismus stein with scrolled handle

modelnr. 182

Uit de verzameling van Paul Van Eck

An early historismus style 19th century stein.

The most uncommon feature of this stein is the scrolled lower handle attachment. This is something you very rarely find on historismus steins. Such scrolls were common in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The verse on the front reads something like:
"Die Sündfluth naht,
die Welt verfault,
So sprachen
die Heidenfürsten
und tranken die Weine ungetauft
mit heidenmässigen
Dürsten"

Translated:
"The Flood approaches
the world decays/rots
So spoke
the heathen/pagans rulers/princes
and they drunk the wines unbaptised
with terribly
thirsts."

The German "Sünde" means "sin" and "Flut" means "flood".
Sündflut/Sintflut = the Flood (from the bible, please see German info: [link] or English info: [link]

The thumblift is shaped like gnome. The heavy pewter 3-ringed hinge is further indication of a fairly early production date, as is the capacity mark which is located at the back of the stein, near the handle's top.

Floral decorations all round.

Height: 18.5 centimeters excluding the lid and thumblift. Stoneware saltglazed stein.
Marked on the base with the mold number 182.

The producer is unknown. If anyone has a clue as to who it might have been produced by, please let me know.
