An beer stein produced by Reinhold Merkelbach: it is not marked with a mold number, only the Merkelbach 'star'.
Furthermore it is glazed on the inside like is not very common with Merkelbach steins.
The inside of the pewter lid is fully marked with the pewterer's information: "Metallwaaren Erzeuger Joh. Stegmann Sohne Budweis fur Zinn und Kunstguss Schilder, Buchstaben, Marken".
('Metalware producer Joh. Stegmann & sons, Budweis, for pewterware and artistic shields, lettering, advertising').
See: [Link]
Dated 1895 on the lid.
The lid is of pewter and shows Gambrinus, the king of beer, holding a beer in one hand, and leaning his other hand on a shield that says "Budweis 1895". it is my belief that the ceramic stein was bought from the Merkelbach company by by Joh. Stegmann Sohne to serve as a advertising object for their own metalware company.
Sadly the stein has a hairline crack in the body. Otherwise in good condition.
