Stein Marzi & Remy #220 "Drinker and Woman".
Gustav Tinwiebel designed this mug specifically for Marzi & Remy.
Gustav Tinwiebel was born in Berlin in 1853. In 1879, he came to Her specifically to create designs for Marzi & Remy. He died in 1933.
The Marzi & Remy factory was founded in 1879 by Anton Marzi and his son-in-law Simon Remy. Gustave Tinwibel worked there as a fashion designer from the very beginning. In 1881, a tin foundry was added. Initially, they produced only blue-gray glazed ceramics, but in 1883 they began to successfully produce cream ceramics "Elfenbeinsteinzeug". Around that time, the factory employed about a hundred people. Between 1907 and 1910, there were strikes and an economic recession.
The metal lid bears the inscription "Froh erwache Jeden Morgen Trinkdein Topfchen ohne Sorgen". Literally translated from German, it means: "Waking up happy every morning, drink from your little pot without worries".
In fact, the text of this German phrase has a double meaning. In fact, this text is a playful German rhyme that can often be found on decorative objects, such as antique chamber pots or souvenir mugs.
Usually the phrase sounds like this: "Froh erwache jeden Morgen, trink dein Tröpfchen ohne Sorgen" (Wake up joyfully every morning, drink your drop without worries). However, our version uses the word "Töpfchen" (pot). The absence of the letter "r" in this word turns the phrase into a funny pun or a wish related to the morning routine (especially in the context of teaching children to use a urine pot or just as a humorous inscription on the subject itself).
Let's analyze the phrase. The German expression "Froh erwache jeden Morgen" is a traditional wish for a good and cheerful morning. "Trinken Töpfchen Ohne Sorgen" is already a pun. In the original, "Tröpfchen" (a drop) usually means a sip of alcohol or coffee "for cheerfulness." Replacing it with "Töpfchen" makes the phrase comical, hinting at a "chamber pot" or a children's theme.
Often such inscriptions were accompanied by other couplets, for example: "So lang ich lebe will ich trinken, und wenn ich sterbe im Fass versinken" (As long as I live, I want to drink, and as soon as I die, I drown in a barrel).
