A unique collectible beer mug in the form of a goalkeeper mask of the Detroit Red Wings NHL team.
This mug is part of the "NHL The Original Six Limited Edition Tankard Collection" (or "Nerves of Steel") series produced by Longton Crown.
The shape of the mug is made in the form of a sculptural interpretation of a modern goalkeeper mask, decorated with the team's logo ("winged wheel") and a list of Stanley Cup victories on the back.
The mug was made in 1996, the volume is about 0.7 liters.
The mug is decorated in the team's signature red and white colors with a winged wheel logo. On the back (by the handle) is a brief history of the club and a list of Stanley Cup wins.
Detroit Red Wings fans know the composition of the Russian Five better than the names of the equally famous Liverpool Four. The defenders in this bundle were Vyacheslav Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov, the attackers were Sergey Fedorov, Vyacheslav Kozlov and Igor Larionov. Sergei Fedorov was the first to join the team in 1990. His escape from the USSR national team during a tournament in the USA became a sensation. Vyacheslav Fetisov, who was almost 37 years old at the time, and Vladimir Konstantinov joined the club in 1995, overcoming bureaucratic obstacles. Igor Larionov, who has already played in the NHL, and Vyacheslav Kozlov completed the top five. General manager Jim Devellano took a chance — before that, the league was dominated by Canadians and Americans, and the Europeans were considered "too soft."
Coach Scotty Bowman didn't just gather talents — he created a link where Fetisov and Konstantinov provided control in defense, and Fedorov, Larionov and Kozlov demonstrated filigree combinations in attack. Their style, based on blind passes, circular movements, and improvisation, was a response to the rough power hockey of the NHL. Critics called it a "circus," but the results silenced the skeptics.
The legendary squad didn't just win trophies — these hockey players changed the NHL. Their style, which combined European technique, team thinking and creativity, proved that hockey can be spectacular without excessive rudeness.
"The whole league at that moment wanted to copy in some way what the Russians were doing in Detroit. It was impossible to compare with them in terms of puck control, and this is what their game was based on even before the NHL. The Russian hockey style definitely had a huge impact on all of us," recalled Russian teammate and three—time Stanley Cup winner Brendan Shanahan.
The five players opened the way to the NHL for Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk. Fedorov became the first European to receive the Hart Trophy in 1994. Fedorov, Larionov and Fetisov became the first Russians in the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. In 2019, the club officially recognized their contribution by hoisting banners with the names of all five hockey players under the arches of the Little Caesars Arena. The Detroit of the 1990s remains an example of how culture and innovation overcome stereotypes. And the "Russian five" is a reminder that real hockey knows no boundaries.
