Rochlitz-Lunzenau Honey Stein

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

Cylindrical (Walzenkrug), high-fired earthenware stein. The body of the stein is separated into three zones, two zones (top and bottom) of ribs/grooves and a smooth middle zone. The handle on the stein appears to have been professionally repaired at some point. Holds approximately .8 L.

The pewter lid, hollow ball thumb lift, and foot ring are appropriate for the time period.

The towns of Rochlitz and Lunzenau are located in Saxony; both lie on the Zwickau Mulde River, approximately 6 – 7 miles apart. Production from this area supposedly ran from about 1730 to 1830. Cylindrical steins usually found today, from Rochlitz and Lunzenau, were mainly produced in the last half of the 1700’s. All of these steins display a dual-color lead glaze decoration in yellow and brown tones. The “honey stein” name referred the yellow, honey-colored, glaze that was applied.

The pewter mark with the initials “CGS” were identified as belonging to Carl Gottlieb Schwartz (Schwartzer), who became a master craftsman before 1781 and is mentioned as a guild elder in 1801.

The pewter mark depicting the lion is from the coat of arms for the Saxon town of Görlitz, approximately 95 east of Rochlitz and Lunzenau. Görlitz is on the river Lusatian Neisse and is the largest town in Upper Lusatia, the second-largest town in the region of Lusatia after Cottbus, and the largest town in the German part of the region of Silesia. Görlitz is the easternmost town in Germany and lies opposite the Polish town of Zgorzelec across the river, which was the eastern part of Görlitz until 1945.
