Floral Faience Stein

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

Holds approximately .85 Liter

No indentation around the top rim. Cylindrical shape with a flair at the base, over which a pewter base ring is fitted. These two attributes are consistent with the stein being manufactured in southern Germany (SCI article “Identifying Faience Steins Part 1” by William Hamer).

The central decoration is a spray of flowers, on the sides are branches with leaves and flowers. Floral decorations, referred to as “German Flowers”, were a popular design motif of numerous German faience factories. The Ansbach and Oettingen factories repeatedly came up as references when doing image searches on the internet. The decoration design appears very similar to some of the faience steins from Oettingen-Schrattenhofen ca.1760-1780 (under the ownership of Albrecht Köhler 1757-1802) pictured in the Beer Stein Library Early Faience Stein Catalog and referenced in the article by John McGregor “A Very Concise History of Faience and a Listing of German Faience Factories”. The handle is decorated with cobalt blue strokes.

The pewter lid, large closed 5 ring hinge, and hollow ball thumb lift are appropriate for the time period. The lid is personalized with the initials A.L.F.
The pewter mark on the underside of the lid was located on page 264 of Süddeutsche Zinngiesser Teil II: Künzelsau/Sulzbach by Erwin Hintze. The mark was identified as belonging to an unknown master craftsman from the town of Stadtamhof who, according to his town mark, acquired the master's license in 1725. Stadtamhof, the formerly independent, ducal/electoral Bavarian town on the north bank of the Danube, was incorporated into Regensburg on April 1, 1924. Stadtamhof's coat of arms has three Petrus keys and not just two like Regensburg.
