Cylindrical stein with a plain body. Holds approximately 1.5 Liters.
The stein has a broad hollow base and dome-shaped lid which appears may be influenced by the Saxonian pewter tradition. Markings indicate the stein was made in the Thuringian town of Pößneck.
The lid is personalized “J.G.G. and dated 1790.
The hollow ball thumb lift and large closed 5 ring hinge are appropriate for the time period.
The pewter marks on the underside of the lid were identified as follows:
The shield with the lion refers to the coat of arms of the German town of Pößneck.
The other mark is attributed to David Samuel Teichmann, who originated from the Thuringian town of Schleiz (near the border with Saxony). Teichmann belonged to a family of pewterers; he obtained his master craftsman's license in 1737 and became a citizen of the town of Pößneck in the same year. The marks were used from 1737 until his death in 1796.
