"The mug of the month".
The mug was made at the Villeroy & Boch (V&B) manufactory. On the outside of the bottom of this mug there is no mark of the year of its production. Although it was the V&B factory that became the first and only mug manufacturer who branded its products not only with a trademark, the number of the mold, but also with the year of its production. Nevertheless, it is important to know that V&B has been engaged in production activities since 1836, but it was only in 1880 that the tradition of stamping the year of production of the mug began. This means that our mug was made before 1880.
At the bottom of the mug, there is a V&B signature seal with the image of the ancient Roman god of trade, profit, travelers, and crafts, Mercury. This seal has been used since 1874. This means that the mug was made between 1874 and 1880.
The mug's artwork was designed by Ludwig Voltz II.
The artist, sculptor, and fashion designer Ludwig Volz II was also a Freemason and, therefore, a Mason. V&B, a staunch Catholic company, would not have tolerated Masonic symbols on their products, and if they had found them, they would have removed them. However, Volz was able to subtly incorporate his "signature" into his designs. Volz was born in Bingen am Rhein in 1809. Most of his Stein designs date from the 1840s and 1850s.
In 1837 he taught at the vocational school in Regensburg, after which he was appointed professor at the Technical College in Munich. Between 1860 and 1863 he was the architect completing the New Parish Church in Regensburg. In the end, he devoted himself to creating statues and other carved items from stone and wood for the Frauenkirche in Munich. He died in Munich in 1867.
For the V&B factory, Ludwig Volz II managed to create several dozen molds, which were repeatedly reprinted for several decades after Volz's passing. This highlights the uniqueness of his talent.
Nevertheless, Voltz's most recognized legacy is his "Twelve Months" series, which was developed in the second half of the 1840s for the V&B manufactory. The "Twelve Months" beer jug, with a capacity of 3.2 liters, has become the ambassador of this series. It is adorned with 12 relief figures representing the 12 months of the year. Each of these figures is accompanied by a relief inscription that contains a proverb associated with the corresponding month.
In addition to the jug, this series includes mugs with capacities of 0.5, 0.3, and 0.25 liters. In our case, we are dealing with a mug with a capacity of 0.3 liters. In the V&B catalog, it is presented under the name "Month Mug," with mold number 1100. On its surface, there are 5 out of 12 figurines representing the summer months of May, June, July, August, and September. In German lands, these are the most favorable months for agriculture.
