"The Dice Players", 1885

Klaus Mayer (1856-1919)

Hauber & Reuther #188. Different subjects/"The Dice Players".

The presented image shows a plot from a painting by a German artist by Klaus Meyer (1856-1919) under the title "The Dice Players" (German. Die Würfelspieler). The original of this work was written in 1885. The plot of the painting is a historical scene in which four men in clothes reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch fashion are enthusiastically playing dice in the interior of a tavern or office.
This composition by Klaus Mayer was so popular that in the late 19th and 20th centuries, many copies of it were created by various masters (for example, Fritz Wagner or Arthur Zepfel). Beer mug manufacturers also took advantage of this.

Klaus Mayer became a professor at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts. His work is represented in the British Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His works are reminiscent of the works of prominent 17th-century masters such as Peter de Hooh (1629-1684) and Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), who had a special influence on him. He often visited museums in the Netherlands to study their techniques.
