This relatively modern (post-war) beer mug is unique and very rare.
First of all, because it was made in no more than a dozen pieces. The mug seems to have been created as part of an exam for a "nameless" graduate of one of Germany's experimental workshops for artistic ceramics.
In the 1960s, there was a surge of interest among young artists in Germany to express themselves in the traditional craft of making ceramic mugs, which was popular in pre-war Germany.
Basically young artists ceramists tried to find their way adhering to new avant-garde solutions to the use of medieval primitive patterns. As a result, a new style of mugs with handmade patterns appeared.
In our case we see an object, the young performer of which was a convinced admirer of the creativity of the masters who developed during the period of 1875-1910 forms for manufactories: Marzi & Remy, J.W. Remy, Reinhold Merkelbach, Merkelbach & Wick. These famous factories adorned the end of the 19th century in Germany with a wave of historicist art. These were simple artistic forms that were popular among artisans in the Middle Ages for depicting scenes from the ancient history of Germanic tribes and principalities. A distinctive feature of the historicist style was the use of expressive small-scale relief and cobalt glaze. This technique provided a color scheme exclusively in blue tones.
The presented mug is decorated with a scene borrowed from the famous Austrian-German artist of the second half of the 19th century, Franz von defregger (1835-1921).
It depicts a typical Tyrolean love couple, a hunter and a shepherdess.
Very few people have the opportunity to add an exam paper of a future master to their collection. In this case, the master has succeeded.
The mug was made between 1955 and 1965.
