Walzenkrug Style Stein

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

Gray stoneware stein with reddish-brown slip applied. Light salt glaze with a matte finish. Cylindrical shape with a slight taper toward the bottom. Impurities in the clay have appeared as a result of firing. Rows of turned grooves applied to upper and lower portion, the center portion is undecorated. Holds approximately 1 liter of liquid.
The handle appears more thin than other early stoneware steins I have, and it has somewhat of a triangular shape.

The thumb lift over the large closed 5 ring hinge would be consistent with it being produced prior to the mid 1700's. By the early 1700's, most steins had a hollow ball thumb lift attached to the rear portion of the lid. The lid is personalized B.H.K.

The monogram pewter touch mark is currently unidentified.

Some characteristics of the stein appear consistent with production in either Köln, Duingen, Siegburg, or Waldenburg. A little more research needs to be done.
