Paulaner-Brau München

I won an auction for a set of 5 modern Paulaner brewery steins in 2023.

The description from the seller follows:

“Merkelbach & Wick was founded 1872 in Grenzhausen, producing steins under the Merkelbach & Wick name until 1921, after which the name changed to Wick-Werke.

These 5 Paulaner steins were some of the original Wick-Werke stein designs of the very early 30s.
Two of the steins mark the 300-year anniversary of Paulaner (founded in 1634). One stein celebrates the "Salvatorkeller," opened in 1780 and now just called the Paulaner Keller, famous for its large Munich beer garden and restaurant, as well as its hosting of Starkbierzeit. The Keller is where the original monastery was located.

The steins were produced for their 150-year anniversary in 1930.

All thumb lifts have the traditional "good luck" acorn. All lids, hinges, straps, etc. are nice, tight and smooth. Marked to hold a half liter of German beer. Each stein is 6.5 inches tall.

Condition: The stein featuring famous Paulaner monk/brewmaster "Barnabas Still" has a small chip on the bottom. The stein featuring "Adelheid" (1636-76) has a small ding on the top of the lid. No other chips, cracks or hairlines. In exceptional condition for their age.”

I had asked the seller if he had any additional information. He said the following, which I found quite funny:

“I know that a lot of steins were produced with varying themes for Paulaner around this time.
How many variations there are, I do not know. It's a real rabbit hole if you try to collect them all. (haha).
Also, there were at least two other companies that produced very similar steins.”

I decided I’d not go down this rabbit hole. Ha ha. But I’m very happy to have a small sampling of the various Paulaner theme steins, even if they’re not pre-war pieces. See my conclusion below.

My conclusion on this particular Paulaner steinkrug after doing some research:

This Paulaner monk stein with the GERZ impressed mark and ERBO ZINN lid is a post-war reproduction, most likely made between 1965–1975. It commemorates or is inspired by an original 1934 design, but the stein itself is not from the 1930s.

Maker: GERZ (modern)
Production Era: c. 1965–1975
Mark: Impressed “GERZ GERMANY” (modern)
Note: Not to be confused with Simon Peter Gerz I or II; this is a post-war industrial version used primarily for brewery and souvenir steins.

As always, I welcome your feedback.
