Walzenkrug

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

westerwald salt-glazed stein.
Holds approximately 1 liter.
Cylindrical body with incised decorations that include a deer or stag and an arrow. Cobalt blue was used to color the decorations.
References in the Beer Stein Book indicate the style of the decorations is consistent with pieces produced in the area of the Hessen village of Steinau.
From the book "Early Stoneware Steins" by Beatrix Adler:
Pg. 387: "Shortly before 1800, knibis and applied reliefs had almost entirely disappeared." The Red (reed) technique and stamping were the preferred decorating methods until c.1850.
The Beer Stein Book indicates the flattened lower end of the handle was one of the techniques potters used c.1770 - 1870.

Per The Beer Stein Book, the large urn thumb lift was common around 1825. The closed 5 ring hinge and lid are appropriate for the time period.
