Blown glass stein with a thick scrolled handle. A combination of deep cuts and shallow cuts (polished) to create the designs. Unique bubble design in the base.
Between 1800 and 1850 the shape of steins was changing from cylindrical to tapered slightly toward the top - "Introduction to Glass Steins" by Gary Kirsner.
Heavy pewter lid, personalized with "Sebastian Bartl." Large closed 5 ring hinge with the thumb lift attached to the lid (pre-1870's). The thumb lift appears to possibly be a pre-Imperial eagle (Adler), which would date prior to 1871. The stein also has a pewter foot ring. According to the John McGregor article "Pewter Fittings Through the Ages", "Due to the rising cost of tin, foot rings began to disappear c.1835. By c.1850, lids were simple pewter rings holding glass or ceramic inserts."
The underside of the lid is marked with an angel who is holding scales in her left hand. Unfortunately, due to the mark being light on one side and some abrasive cleaning by a previous owner, I can't determine what is in the right hand or if there are any numbers or initials. May just be a quality or purity mark.
