Walzenkrug

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

westerwald salt-glazed stein.
Holds approximately 1 liter.
Bright gray cylindrical body with cobalt blue coloring.
Incised decorations with the Red (reed) technique used in the floral central decoration.

From the book "Early Stoneware Steins" by Beatrix Adler:
Pg. 387: "Shortly before 1800, knibis and applied reliefs had almost entirely disappeared." The Red (reed) technique and stamping were the preferred decorating methods until c.1850.
The Beer Stein Book pg. 27 indicates the presence of a thumb print at the lower end of the handle was one of the techniques potters used c.1750 - 1790.
Given this information, I would probably rough date this stein to the late 1700's.

The closed 5 ring hinge, hollow ball thumb lift, and lid are appropriate for the time period.
