Bock and Zwerg

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

Mold blown glass with applied handle and pedestal. Wheel ground/polished facets on the body and wheel ground/polished ovals on the bands. Mold blown technique developed c.1840 and used until c.1870's/1880's, when the pressed glass technique became the preferred method.

Heavy 3 ring hinge popular c.1875-1895. Heavy pewter lid with the finial depicting a Bock (male goat) knocking over a humpen. The thumb lift depicts a Zwerg (dwarf) holding a cornucopia. The elongated shank is decorated with detailed etchings.
According to the article "Pewter Fittings Through the Ages" by John McGregor, steins tended to have fancy pewter lids and thumblifts from c.1875-1900 due to an abundant supply of materials.

The stein stands 13" to the top of the glass and 16.5" to the top of the finial.
