Oktoberfest 1951 Trachtenzug 2 liter stein

Aus die Sammlung von Walter Swett

This is the 2-liter version of the 1951 Oktoberfest Trachten und Schützenzug (Oktoberfest traditional costume and marksmen parade). The stein is known to exist as both 1 and 2-liter versions which were given out to groups participating in that year’s parade.

The saying on the back - Erinnerungsgabe der Stadt München translates to: A souvenir from the City of Munich

Based on confirmed markings on a 1-liter version, it is believed this stein was produced by AGWW Aktien Gesellschaft Wick Werk. The inside of the lid is stamped with the mark of Munich pewterer Max Rackl - M. RACKL MÜNCHEN.

The Trachten und Schützenzug traces its history to the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the marriage of King Ludwig I and Therese of Bavaria marriage and the 25th Oktoberfest. The first parade celebrating Bavarian culture and daily life had 86 floats with more than 1,000 participants all wearing traditional Bavarian clothing and sharpshooters.

Although held several times over the years on special occasions, the Trachten und Schützenzug did not become an annual event until 1948 when it appeared at the scaled down Fall Festival. In 1949, the fest returned in a recognizable form as the Oktoberfest and was opened with the Trachten und Schützenzug featuring 123 Groups from Munich and Upper Bavaria, but it still lacked the participation of the sharpshooters which had been prohibited by the military occupation government. The tradition has carried on annually since. Recent Trachten und Schützenumzug involve over 9,000 participants and draws over 250,000 spectators to watch the event.
