F. W. Merkelbach II and Peter Wick founded the Merkelbach & Wick factory in 1872. The secret to Merkelbach & Wick's superiority was their attention to detail. When you pick up one of these early pieces the quality is immediately apparent. Pride in this product by local residents was well justified. However, by the mid 1880s this superiority had faded and Merkelback & Wick's quality was very much on a par with other regional factories.
