Glass stein with enamel decorations

From the collection of Paul Van Eck

A very nice glass stein, amber green colored glass. Decorated in enamel.
Uncommon metal lid with crown-like finial and enamel decorations.

The lid, its attachment and the thumblift indicate this stein was not produced in Germany. In my opinion it has some of Scandinavian or Eastern European characteristics.

In October 2021 a kind collector who saw this listing on MySteinCollection sent me the following information:

"Your glass stein mounting has a silver "saddle clamp" at the handle, the hinge pin is silver and meant to be removable and the decorative knob on the pin shows up as an added feature.

So far the silver looks like late fourth quarter of the nineteenth century. The underside of the lid shows a gold wash as a means of preventing silver tarnish, and is common on silver lids.

The enameled work on the lid is unusual, and needs to be researched. I agree the stein glass decoration could be Eastern European in origin. But the glass still favors German or Bohemian in design and shaped in that time period as mentioned.

There is always the chance a Bohemian merchant of glass in in some distant place ordered this piece to impress a customer or it could be a direct sales order. The final is probably not a crown, but might tie into the glass enamel decoration in some way. Hope I have been some help to you. The entire glass piece is a nice example of seldom seen steins."

Very nice stein. Would look good in my collection. I've been collecting for 30 years, with a couple of dormant years here and there. Probably 90% of the collection are glass steins with a large number from the late 1700s to early 1800s.
